Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie writes to Priests, Religious and the Lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Accra on the issue of taking of second collections as donation for couples at weddings and bereaved families at funerals.
Archbishop Kwofie states that the issue of taking second collections at weddings and funeral Masses has been raised in almost all the parishes or churches he visited.
Although some parishes and churches were able to make a donation to newly married couples and bereaved members of the church, some parishes had not been able to meet expectations of parishioners in that regard and had received some backlash for their inability to support members during weddings and funerals.
His Grace therefore consulted with his College of Consultors and Council of Priests and subsequently consulted with Priests at an assembly on 18th November 2020 and finally decided that effective First Sunday of Advent 2020, that is Sunday 29th November 2020 second collection will be taken at weddings and funeral Masses and the full amount will be given to the couples or bereaved families without counting.
The letter spotted by Radio Angelus stated “second collections should be taken in all parishes and stations during weddings and funerals and the amounts realised be given in full, without counting, to the couples, or to the bereaved families as the case may be”.
This is to show our love, appreciation, and concern for them.
