South African Bishop calls for support for underprivileged amidst global crisis

Most Rev. Sithembele Sikupa, Bishop of Mthatha, South Africa and 1st Vice President of SECAM has urged Christians to extend a helping hand to those in need in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says as Christians, “while we must regularly wash our hands to avoid the virus, let us not wash our hands of our responsibility for each other, particularly the poor who feel the impact of the lockdown the most and who will be affected by the effects of the virus the most.”

He added there is the need for thinking about the greater chunk of people who live by vending and doing daily jobs for survival and helping them cope during these times.

His statement comes in the wake of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and initiatives by various governments around the globe to minimize the spread by placing restrictions on the movements of its citizens.
