As of August 2020, the Covid-19 scare in Ghana had seen a nosedive. Inasmuch as Government and Non-governmental agencies have campaigned towards spreading calm and not fear, the current state of indifference to the disease among a section of Ghanaians is alarming.
It is visible in news reports and direct observations that after the Security Services pulled out of the mask inspection assignments, part of the populace have also withdrawn.
As part of the news culture to give priority to politics and others, media focus on Covid-19 keeps lowering on the running order of bulletins. Meanwhile, people still get infected each day and they become statistics.
Based on the above, Radio Angelus, the online radio section of the Department of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM), of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra carried out a special program to sensitize the general public about the disease with up-to-date information as well as related discussions.
The show dubbed COVID HOTLINE was a 30-munite talk show on Tuesdays, 7.30pm to 8.00pm, hosted by Andy Manomey, supported each night by Ekow Boakye, Gameli Adadevoh and Jean Luc with production.
Journalists, Medical Doctors, Health Professionals, students and ordinary Ghanaians were engaged on various topics about COVID-19, which included Understanding the disease, the media overview of the novel coronavirus, staying alive during the pandemic, underlying conditions and COVID, how to prevent the infection among others.
The four week program was sponsored by Star Ghana, Caritas Ghana and coordinated by the Caritas Office of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra.
Rev. Fr. George Ekow Mensah, Director of the Caritas Office, Catholic Archdiocese of Accra said in an interview with Radio Angelus that support is needed from well-meaning individuals and societies to enhance the work of the office, which is to support the poor and vulnerable in the society.
