The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra launched its version of the sensitisation programme ahead of the December 17 referendum yesterday, November 13 at Christ the King parish, Cantonments as directed by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for all Diocese and Archdiocese’s to organise a sensitisation program on the upcoming referendum. 

The sensitisation programme was launched by Very Rev. Fr. John Kobina Louis, Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra. 

The event offered participants the opportunity to be educated on the upcoming referendum. Mrs. Clara Kasser-Tee, a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) law school, delivering the keynote address said there has been a lot of confusion surrounding this referendum.

“From my interaction with a lot of people I have realized there is a lot of confusion as to what this referendum is all about. This referendum is not about electing MMDCEs” she said.

She added that “this referendum is seeking to empower the political parties so that the political parties can present candidates in the assembly and unit committee elections. In simple terms, should we introduce partisan politics into the election of assembly and unit committee members?”

Voting a YES for this referendum means political parties now get to sponsor candidates to contest as assembly men, assembly women and unit committee members.

Other speakers at the event were Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tetteh: two deputies of the Electoral commission of Ghana, representatives from the National Commission of Civic Education, Institute for Democratic Governance and the Christian Council of Ghana.

Earlier in the day, the Sekondi Takoradi Diocese also launched it’s sensitization program.

The next phase of action after the launch is education at the parish levels.
